Borrowed Your Friend’s Car? Who Gets the Challan? A Challan Checking Guide
Challans are important if you are allowing someone else to drive your car. E-challans are issued to vehicles based on the registration number. This means that whoever owns the vehicle (whether that be a cousin, friend or customer) will receive the notice.
What can the owner do?
Check Challan when and what date the it was issued and if it was for a friend/relative simply ask them to pay you. If it was a rental then check what was in your agreement. Many companies will transfer the fine to the customer. Also, until the fine has been paid the record will be on the vehicle so it is best to get this cleared up asap.
How can MyMotor help?
Our vehicle information platform MyMotor can help you to check the challans on your vehicle both before and after lending. All we require is the registration number and you can see if there are any outstanding or paid fines. We show the offence, location, amount and due date.
You can do a quick search, however to view more detailed information you will need to log in for free. From here you can pay within the app. There is also a history of transactions so you can see previous payments made.
We also show the RC details, insurance and PUC information so you can confirm that the owner and vehicle details are correct.
On the web version we have challan pages for 20+ states like rajasthan (echallan rajasthan), kerala(kerala mvd challan), gujarat (echallan gujarat), maharashtra(mh challan) and many more. You can also double check the amount owed using the official Parivahan portal.
Challan App
All the information from above can be found on our Challan Check App. Simply take a minute to check before and after giving the keys to someone. If there is a new fine then it is easy to see which trip it relates to. Whatever app you use ensure that you pay via an official channel and the full details of the violation are shown.
Electric Vehicle?
If you own an EV then there is one more thing to consider. Ensure that the person borrowing knows where they can charge their car. It is good to know who is paying for the charge. Our EV Charging App shows 3000+ charging points across 30+ networks. All in real time showing availability, connector type, speed and price. All can be paid using one wallet. By sharing the connector details with them you avoid any issues with them not having the correct plug nearby.
Expectations
More automated fines – With more monitoring using cameras there will be more challans issued to owners.
Older data – Owners are likely to rely more on older data to see who had the vehicle and when.
Easy online payments – Likely that states will continue to move towards online payments and disputes.
One place for your vehicle – Challans, documents and EV charging may become more centralised.
Good habits
Record the date/time the vehicle was borrowed.
Ask them to let you know if they notice any fines.
Ensure your mobile number is up to date on your RC details.
Rules and fines vary between states. Double check with the traffic authority to ensure you have the latest details.
