Meaning and use

Regular verbs form their positive past simple with -ed or -d. Use the same past form with every subject: I worked, she worked, they worked. A verb ending in -e usually adds -d. A consonant + y changes to -ied. Some short verbs double the final consonant, as in stop → stopped. The past simple can describe a completed action or a repeated habit in a finished past period. Be has its own forms, was and were.

Grammar patterns

Pattern	Example or form
Most regular verbs: add -ed	work → worked; visit → visited

1. I visited my aunt yesterday.

   ខ្ញុំបានទៅលេងមីងកាលពីម្សិលមិញ។

2. She studied English last night.

   នាងបានរៀនភាសាអង់គ្លេសកាលពីយប់មិញ។

3. We played football on Sunday.

   យើងបានលេងបាល់ទាត់នៅថ្ងៃអាទិត្យកន្លងទៅ។

4. They lived here last year.

   ពួកគេបានរស់នៅទីនេះកាលពីឆ្នាំមុន។

Everyday conversation

Dara: What did you do yesterday?

Maly: I visited my aunt.

Dara: What did your brother do?

Maly: He played football.

Common mistakes

Instead of	Use	Why
She studyed last night.	She studied last night.	Change consonant + y to -ied.
They visit my aunt yesterday.	They visited my aunt yesterday.	Use the past form for this completed action yesterday.
