Meaning and use

A subject pronoun can take the place of the person or thing doing an action or being described. Use I for yourself and you for the person or people you are speaking to. We includes the speaker. They can refer to several people or things; it is also used for a person whose gender is unknown or who uses they. Use the pronoun a person uses for themselves. The pronoun you can be singular or plural.

Subject pronoun ជំនួសនាមដែលជាប្រធាន។ I សម្រាប់អ្នកនិយាយ ហើយ you សម្រាប់អ្នកដែលយើងកំពុងនិយាយទៅកាន់។ We រួមបញ្ចូលអ្នកនិយាយ។ They អាចសំដៅលើមនុស្ស ឬវត្ថុច្រើន ហើយក៏អាចប្រើសម្រាប់មនុស្សម្នាក់តាមបរិបទផងដែរ។

Examples

1. I am a student.

   ខ្ញុំជាសិស្សម្នាក់។

2. Dara and I study English. We study together.

   ដារ៉ា និងខ្ញុំរៀនភាសាអង់គ្លេស។ យើងរៀនជាមួយគ្នា។

3. The book is new. It is useful.

   សៀវភៅនេះថ្មី។ វាមានប្រយោជន៍។

4. The students are here. They are ready.

   សិស្សនៅទីនេះ។ ពួកគេរួចរាល់ហើយ។

Everyday conversation

Dara: Are you a student?

Maly: Yes, I am.

Dara: Do your friends study here?

Maly: Yes. They study here too.

Common mistakes

Instead of	Use	Why
Me am a student.	I am a student.	Use the subject pronoun I before am.
The books are new. It are useful.	The books are new. They are useful.	Use they to refer to the plural noun books.
