Joining Ideas with And, But, and Because

Writing focus

And adds related information, but marks a contrast, and because gives a reason. Choose the connector from the relationship, not to make every sentence longer. A because-clause can come first if a main clause follows. Avoid combining although and but in the same ordinary concession structure.

And បន្ថែមព័ត៌មាន; but បង្ហាញភាពផ្ទុយ; because បង្ហាញមូលហេតុ។ ជ្រើសពាក្យភ្ជាប់តាមទំនាក់ទំនងរវាងគំនិត មិនមែនគ្រាន់តែធ្វើឱ្យប្រយោគវែងទេ។

Reason	I stayed home because it rained.

Examples

1. I bought a notebook and a pen.

   ខ្ញុំទិញសៀវភៅកត់ត្រា និងប៊ិច។

2. The room is small, but it is comfortable.

   បន្ទប់តូច តែមានផាសុកភាព។

3. I arrived late because the bus broke down.

   ខ្ញុំមកយឺត ព្រោះឡានក្រុងខូច។

4. Because I was tired, I took a break.

   ព្រោះខ្ញុំហត់ ខ្ញុំបានសម្រាក។

Common mistakes

Instead of	Use	Why
Because I was busy. (standalone explanation in formal paragraph)	I replied late because I was busy.	Attach the reason clause to a main clause.
Although it was late, but we continued.	Although it was late, we continued.	Do not double-mark this concession with but.
