One Paragraph, One Main Idea

Writing focus

A beginner paragraph is easier to follow when it develops one main idea. A topic sentence introduces that idea, and the remaining sentences explain or illustrate it. Not every paragraph must begin with a topic sentence, but this is a useful learning structure. Remove details that belong to a different topic.

Examples

1. My neighbourhood is convenient.

   តំបន់ខ្ញុំរស់នៅងាយស្រួល។

2. There is a market near my house.

   មានផ្សារជិតផ្ទះខ្ញុំ។

3. The bus stop is only five minutes away.

   ចំណតឡានក្រុងនៅឆ្ងាយតែប្រាំនាទី។

4. These places make daily life easier.

   កន្លែងទាំងនេះធ្វើឱ្យជីវិតប្រចាំថ្ងៃងាយស្រួល។

Model writing

My neighbourhood is a convenient place to live. There is a market near my house, so I can buy food easily. The bus stop is only five minutes away. There is also a small park where my family can walk in the evening. These places make daily life easier.

Common mistakes

Instead of	Use	Why
My neighbourhood convenient.	My neighbourhood is convenient.	The description needs is.
The bus stop are nearby.	The bus stop is nearby.	A singular subject takes is.
