Form formal conditionals without if.
What you’ll learn
Form formal conditionals without if.
Meaning and use
Formal conditional inversion can replace if with had, were, or should before the subject. Had marks an unreal past condition; were to often marks a hypothetical future; should makes a condition tentative. Negatives place not after the subject. Not every if-clause can be inverted by moving any verb.

Common mistakes
| Instead of | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Had not I checked, I would have missed it. | Had I not checked, I would have missed it. | In a full negative inverted conditional, not follows the subject. |
| Were she ask, I would agree. | Were she to ask, I would agree. | Use were + subject + to-infinitive in this hypothetical pattern. |
