Distinguish not all, none, and other scope relationships.
What you’ll learn
Distinguish not all, none, and other scope relationships.
Meaning and use
Not all means some members fall outside a statement; it does not mean none. All did not can be ambiguous, so rewrite when precision matters. Not necessarily rejects inevitability rather than truth. Scope depends on syntax, context, and stress, so an explicit paraphrase is often the safest editorial choice.
Grammar patterns
| Pattern | Example or form |
|---|---|
| Partial versus total negation | Not all passed. / None passed. |
| Limited rejection | Expensive does not necessarily mean better. |
Examples
-
Not every applicant was interviewed.
-
None of the applicants was selected.
-
Both answers are not necessarily wrong.
-
A longer answer is not always a better answer.
Everyday conversation
Dara: Did everyone pass?
Maly: Not everyone. Most passed, but three students need another attempt.
Common mistakes
| Instead of | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Not all students passed. (intended: nobody passed) | No students passed. | Not all is partial negation, not total exclusion. |
| Every applicant were not selected. | Not every applicant was selected. | Every applicant is singular; this wording clearly expresses partial negation. |
