Meaning and use

Past forms and modals can make a request more tentative without referring to past time. Could, would, and I was wondering often soften requests. Acknowledging a point before disagreement can maintain a constructive tone. Politeness also depends on relationship, urgency, culture, and clarity, not only on sentence length.

Grammar patterns

Pattern	Example or form
Tentative request	I was wondering whether you could help.

   តើយើងអាចពិនិត្យតួលេខម្ដងទៀតបានទេ?

2. I was wondering whether you had a moment.

   ខ្ញុំចង់សួរថាអ្នកមានពេលបន្តិចទេ។

3. I understand the concern, but I see it differently.

   ខ្ញុំយល់កង្វល់នោះ ប៉ុន្តែខ្ញុំមើលខុសពីនេះ។

4. Would you mind checking the final paragraph?

   តើអ្នកអាចជួយពិនិត្យកថាខណ្ឌចុងក្រោយបានទេ?

Common mistakes

Instead of	Use	Why
Would you mind to check it?	Would you mind checking it?	Mind takes an -ing complement.
Could you possibly to send it?	Could you possibly send it?	The modal takes a bare infinitive despite the intervening adverb.
